Yes, obviously kids are a hoot and that’s typically why people hire me, to capture the beautiful crazy that is their life with littles. BUT, much like LEGO, there’s no age limit to documentary family photography.
I’d argue it’s equally important to preserve the love and beauty of ALL our relationships, especially as we age. Not just between us and our children, but with our spouses, our parents, our siblings, and our pets.
We take SO many photos of our kids, but as we get older and more self-conscious, we overwhelmingly tend to avoid getting in pictures. Or, we delete ones that we do take as we don’t like how we look. That’s such a shame. Please, don’t do this. Promise me?
You don’t need to share your photos. I know the world gives us such a push to share, share, share, with everyone and their mother, but you don’t need to! You can print them and tuck them away to be found later (always such a fun surprise!) or just send them to your loved ones asking them not to post publicly. Don’t delete them because you don’t like how you look, they love you, imperfections and all. I swear!
Another reason to love documentary family photography is because our pets are a part of our family, and with this approach, they are able to be present in your family photographs as well, showing their unique personalities and their relationships.
So yeah, documentary family photography has no limits. It’s for everyone!
If you ever want to grab a drink (bubble tea, kombucha, coffee, a beer, whatever!) to see if it’s right for you (and to see if you could tolerate me for several hours at a stretch), please reach out! I’m here!
