Details Matter

“Success is 1% inspiration, 98% perspiration, and 2% attention to detail.” – Phil Dunphy

Documentary family photography captures not just the love, but also the humor in your everyday life. In this photo, a little boy misplaced his tool belt, but instead of finding it, he just proceeded to stuff his toy hammer, screwdriver and pliers in the waistband of his shorts.

My family and I just binge watched all 11 seasons of Modern Family in under a year and this quote spoke to me for this post.

I love looking for the tiny little details during my sessions.

The details are what makes life so sweet.

We notice them, but too often, only in the periphery.

While we have such fond memories of the details, say, our child’s pudgy hands or our grandmother’s wrinkled ones…

we seldom have have photos to go along with our memories.

We might have some photos, but they are not close enough, or of a high enough quality, so the details get lost.

This is one of the benefits to documentary family photography. I have the eye and the equipment to focus on the big picture, as well as the beautiful, little details that so often go unphotographed.
